Shanna Maurizi

Explorer

December 2013

Recently returned from an artist residency in Slovenia, Shanna Maurizi presents new work that explores areas where description attempts to give shape to unknown phenomena.  Graffiti lettering from ancient cave walls forms an indecipherable language which fails to elucidate the object pictured, and circular forms float across a photographic landscape that is difficult to identify.  Working with the tension between the opposing poles of scientific understanding and mystification, the pieces originate in film photography and are realized as altered C-prints, collages, and screenprints.
