The Comfort of Rocks

March 2014

The intertwining of commerce and the natural world is explored in this series of mixed-media sculptures titled “the comfort of rocks.” Rocks that have been created from simple plaster are melded with decorative elements such as gold leaf. Simulated geodes are partially engulfed by decorative flocking. Large hand-made boulders gilded with luminous silver leaf are support by stacks of pink foam rubber. The resulting mash-up re-casts the humble and the precious, the natural and the artificial into oddly abstract and slightly nonsensical material relationships.
